The State government is monitoring epidemic diseases such as malaria, dengue, and COVID-19, among others, in the State, even as it keeps a strict vigil on Ebola. Legislators will be heading committees for screening epidemic diseases in Assembly constituencies across the State. Passengers arriving from African countries, including Congo and Uganda, are being screened and samples are being collected from them, Health Department sources said after a review meeting of the department chaired by Health and Family Welfare Minister U.T. Khader here on Monday.
So far, no cases of Ebola have been reported among passengers arriving in Karnataka, while about 150 passengers have completed the 21-day quarantine period. The State is also keeping a vigil in the border districts adjoining Andhra Pradesh and Telangana over possible COVID-19 transmission, sources said. “The number of epidemic disease cases is lower this year than at the same time last year.
This has been possible due to the precautions taken by the State government,” sources said. Malaria and dengue cases are down by 70% and 33%, respectively, and there have been no COVID-19-related deaths since January this year. Sources said that doctors are being hired on a contract basis for Primary Health Centres in districts such as Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, and Chamarajanagar, where posts are vacant.
Sources said that drug availability across the State was found to be satisfactory by the Minister, who also reviewed the issues being faced by doctors.
