Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Somu Veerraju has said the current political environment does not allow any leader from the Kapu community to become the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. Speaking at an event held here on Monday to pay tributes to Kapu leaders Mudragada Padmanabham and G.S. Rao, Mr. Veerraju, a former president of the Bharatiya Janata Party State unit, said, “We, the Kapu community, need to deeply understand today’s politics in Andhra Pradesh that will not let any Kapu leader become the Chief Minister.
Everybody needs to introspect why towering personalities from the community are not being allowed to join the parties, including the BJP.'’ The Kapu community unit in the city organised the event in memory of former MP, four-time MLA and former Minister Mudragada Padmanabham, who passed away on July 14, and Kovvuru-based former president of Kapu Nadu and AP Congress Committee G.S. Rao, who died on July 11. Remembering his association with Padmanabham, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council and YSRCP leader Botcha Satyanarayana said the duo had witnessed many struggles during their political journey.
Referring to the movement led by Padmanabham for the cause of Kapu community, Mr. Satyanarayana said the community needed to continue its struggle for rights. “In today’s democracy, nothing comes by begging and whatever is needed should be taken,” he said. MLC Thota Trimurthulu, a close aide of Padmanabham, appealed to the Kapu community to draw inspiration from the struggles of Padmanabham to achieve reservation for the community. “The real tribute to Padmanabham is to revive his movement for the reservation. In Vijayawada, a high-level meeting should be held with Kapu leaders from across the State to decide a plan of action to take forward the social movement of Padmanabham,” said Mr. Trimurthulu.
YSRCP leader Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy hailed the honesty and uncompromising attitude of Padmanabham. Kapu leaders Jakkampudi Raja, Jakkampudi Ganesh, Ambati Rambabu, Kurasala Kannababu, and senior YSRCP leaders offered floral tributes to the portraits of Padmanabham and G.S. Rao.
