The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leader and former Minister Perni Venkatramaiah (Nani) has alleged that law and order in Andhra Pradesh has deteriorated under the TDP-led NDA government, accusing it of weakening the police system through political interference. Addressing a press conference at the YSRCP central office in Tadepalli on Monday, Mr. Nani claimed that police stations were functioning at the behest of ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders, depriving ordinary people of access to justice.
He questioned whether FIRs were being registered only after obtaining the approval of local TDP MLAs and alleged that the State was being governed according to the “Red Book” rather than the Constitution. Referring to an incident at Nagarampalem in Guntur, Mr. Nani alleged that a woman was assaulted and publicly humiliated after her family refused to pay an alleged bribe demanded by local TDP functionaries for repairs to a privately owned borewell.
He claimed that the police delayed registering an FIR despite the assault and alleged that the woman and her son were attacked again while her husband was at the police station. He further alleged that local women intervened to protect the victim. Nani also alleged that the police had omitted serious charges such as attempt to murder and extortion despite references in the complaint to an alleged attempt to strangulate the victim and the theft of jewellery.
He accused the government of trying to downplay the incident and claimed that action against the accused was initiated only after videos of the assault surfaced in the media.
