The Visakhapatnam district committee of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) on Monday organised a signature campaign near the District Collectorate, demanding the immediate implementation of 33% reservation for women in Parliament and State Legislative Assemblies without linking it to the delimitation process.
Addressing the gathering, retired professor of Political Science and Public Administration at Andhra University, M. Nalini, said that adequate representation of women in decision-making bodies was essential for a vibrant democracy. She argued that the reservation was a constitutional right and not a concession.
AIDWA leaders criticised the Union government for making the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Act contingent on the completion of the Census and delimitation exercise. They urged the Centre to remove the condition and enforce the reservation during the ongoing Parliament Monsoon Session.
District president R.N. Madhavi, district secretary Y. Satyavati and other leaders participated. Members of the public signed a banner in support of the demand.
