(File) With the Ram Mandir issue and related investigations largely behind it, the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) is now preparing for its next ideological battle. And this time, it is going to be over what it calls the ‘protection of the Indian family system’, or Parivar Prabodhan. In its two-day central managing committee meeting in Delhi’s Chattarpur, the VHP adopted a resolution arguing that judicial recognition of live-in relationships, the decriminalisation of adultery and homosexuality have adversely affected the traditional family structure. The organisation has called for a nationwide debate and fresh legislation to prevent what it describes as erosion of the family institution. THE RESOLUTION “The resolution stated that the Indian family system has, for centuries, kept society cultured, organised, and bound by a sense of mutual affection. It further stated that the challenges of the present time require serious solutions at both the societal and governmental levels. According to the resolution, certain judicial decisions have adversely affected the traditional strong family system, such as the recognition of extramarital relationships, the granting of legal status to live-in relationships, and the recognition of homosexuality.
It called for comprehensive discussions on these issues so that laws may be enacted to prevent harm to the family institution," said a VHP statement. The resolution signals a strategic expansion of the VHP’s programmes from temple-centric mobilisation to issues of culture, family and social values. The organisation announced that it will launch a nationwide Parivar Prabodhan campaign to promote family values and strengthen the traditional family structure. The move comes at a time when questions around marriage, changing social relationships and evolving legal rights increasingly occupy public discourse. NEED FOR DEBATE For the VHP, however, these are not isolated legal or judicial questions but part of a broader civilisational-social debate. The resolution argues that the family has historically been the foundation of Indian society and that preserving it requires both social awareness and legislative intervention. VHP’s stand is also politically significant. While the Supreme Court has decriminalised homosexuality and adultery, and has recognised live-in relationships in various legal contexts, the VHP has sought a wider public discussion, or fresh narrative on whether existing legal frameworks adequately protect what it calls the traditional family system. The family resolution was among four major decisions adopted by the VHP’s highest decision-making body. The organisation also revived the long-pending issue of the murder of Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati, demanding a CBI probe into the Kandhamal case and expressing concern that the inquiry commission’s report has not been made public.
