Pvt. schools in State must display fee structure on notice boards, websites: Madras HC The Madras High Court today (July 8, 2026) invoked its extraordinary jurisdiction under Article 226 (power to issue writs) of the Constitution and ordered that all private schools in Tamil Nadu must display their fee structure on their notice boards and websites. Justice M. Dhandapani ordered that the Director of Private Schools must ensure that the fee structure, fixed for individual schools by the government-appointed fee determination committee, gets updated by the private schools periodically on their notice boards and websites.
The directions were isssued while disposing of a writ petition filed by All India Private Educational Institutions Association, represented by its general secretary K. Palaniappan of Chennai, which had challenged a circular issued by the Director of Private Schools on June 1. 2. Jothi Nirmalasamy, a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, to step down from her post.
Nirmalasamy, who is also the Chairperson of the Tamil Nadu Delimitation Commission, assumed office as the State Election Commissioner in March 2024 for a five-year term. Her tenure ends in May 2029. The State Election Commission is a Constitutional and autonomous body responsible for conducting free and fair elections to local self-governments. 3. Backward status of converts to Islam: T.N. moves Supreme Court against Madras HC order The Tamil Nadu government has appealed against a Madras High Court decision that a convert to Islam cannot claim the status of Backward Class Muslim.
Last month, the High Court had declared unconstitutional a 2024 government order allowing converts to claim backward status.
