Madras HC restrains ECI from notifying byelections in five constituencies The Madras High Court today (July 10, 2026) restrained the Election Commission of India (ECI) from notifying byelections to Tiruchi East, Perundurai, Ambasamudram, Viralimalai, and Karur Assembly constituencies until July 31 because, though the elected representatives of these constituencies had resigned, their victories had been challenged by way of election petitions before the court. Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice G. Arul Murugan passed the interim order following a public interest litigation (PIL) petition filed by K. Venkatachalapathy of Tirunelveli who contended that conduct of byelection before the disposal of election petitions could lead to an anomalous situation of the constituencies being represented by two individuals, if the petitions get allowed. 2. Joseph Vijay, was on a one-day visit to Karur for the first time in nine months after the September 27 stampede last year that claimed the lives of 41 persons during his party’s roadshow. Speaking at Atlas Kalaiarangam in Karur, Mr. Vijay, who stated that the stampede was a deep scar in his life, announced a memorial for the victims of the 2025 stampede, on behalf of TVK. Coming down heavily on the DMK, he termed the Dravidian party the “vending machine” of corruption. Later in the day, he handed over appointment orders for government jobs to 31 kin of people killed in the tragic stampede as the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court today refused to grant a stay on the Tamil Nadu government’s move, following a plea challenging the decision.
