FedEx CEO Raj Subramaniam (Credits: Reuters) A single phone call during one of the toughest job markets in the United States helped shape the future of Raj Subramaniam, who now leads global logistics giant FedEx as its chief executive officer. In 1991, the India-born executive was pursuing an MBA in marketing and finance at the University of Texas at Austin while looking for work. The US economy was in recession, unemployment had crossed 7%, and companies had slowed recruitment, making it difficult for graduates to secure jobs. Subramaniam had already completed his engineering degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and later earned a science degree from Syracuse University before enrolling for his MBA. Despite his qualifications, finding employment remained a challenge. His breakthrough came unexpectedly when his roommate decided not to attend a scheduled interview with FedEx because he was returning to India. Instead of letting the opportunity slip away, Subramaniam called the recruiter himself and asked whether he could send his résumé and be considered for the role.
“Jobs were hard to come by, and my roommate at that time had decided to go back to India," Subramaniam was quoted as saying by Fortune in a podcast. Describing the moment, he said he overheard his roommate declining the interview over the phone. “I immediately picked up the phone and said, ‘Give me the number,’ and I called over and said, ‘You just talked to my roommate, but he doesn’t want to do the interview, but I am still here. Can I send you my resume?’ And they said, ‘Okay.’ And the rest is history," he recalled. That conversation earned him an entry-level position at FedEx’s headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee. Over the years, he steadily climbed the ranks by taking on new responsibilities and overseas assignments. Between 1996 and 2003, Subramaniam was based in Hong Kong, where he led the company’s marketing operations across the Asia-Pacific region. He has often credited his career growth to his willingness to embrace unfamiliar roles and accept new opportunities whenever they came his way. Interestingly, becoming CEO was not part of his original career plan. According to Subramaniam, it was only after he became regional president of FedEx Canada in 2003 that he began to see himself leading the company one day. He later held several senior leadership positions, including Executive Vice-President of Marketing and Communications.
