Tripura DGP Anurag Dhankar Found Dead At Police Headquarters In Agartala Published By, Last Updated: July 20, 2026, 15:53 IST Senior IPS officer and Tripura Police chief Anurag Dhankar was found dead at his office in Agartala on Monday, with authorities yet to confirm the cause of death. Officials have not yet revealed the cause of his death, and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. Dhankar, a 1994-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, assumed charge as the Director General of Police of Tripura on May 17, 2025. Prior to his appointment as the state’s police chief, he was serving as Director General of Police (Intelligence) while also overseeing the Law and Order wing as Additional Director General of Police.
He had returned to Tripura in September 2023 as Additional Director General of Police before being given responsibility for the state’s law and order. In January 2024, he was entrusted with the Intelligence portfolio in addition to his existing responsibilities. Three Decades Of Service Across State, Centre And UN Mission Over a career spanning nearly three decades, Dhankar held several key positions in Tripura Police. In the early years of his service, he worked as SDPO of Longtharai Valley, Superintendent of Police in the then undivided West and South Tripura districts, Superintendent of Police (Special Branch), and Assistant Inspector General of Police (Headquarters). His experience also extended beyond the state. He served with the United Nations Mission in Kosovo during 2003-04 before moving on central deputation, where he worked in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as Superintendent of Police and later Deputy Inspector General between 2005 and 2013.
After completing his central assignment, he returned to Tripura as Inspector General of Police (Law and Order). He later went back on deputation to the Centre, where he held senior positions at the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), and the CBI, serving as Inspector General, Joint Director and Additional Director during different tenures. Honoured For Distinguished Service Apart from his policing assignments, Dhankar also chaired the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs to investigate cases linked to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. During his career, he received the Police Medal for Meritorious Service as well as the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in recognition of his contribution to policing.
