Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Sunday reviewed preparations for the Sub-Junior Badminton Championship, scheduled to be held at the historic Raizada Hansraj Stadium in Jalandhar in December, and announced a special grant of Rs 2.14 crore for the construction of a state-of-the-art indoor badminton hall. During his visit, the Chief Minister said the Badminton Championship would return to Jalandhar after nearly 44 years, describing it as a significant milestone for Punjab’s sporting ecosystem. He said the Under-13 championship would help promote badminton in the state and encourage young athletes to pursue sports. “The championship for the Under-13 category will provide a major boost to badminton in Punjab and further strengthen the sporting culture in the state. The Punjab Government is committed to promoting sports to channelise the boundless energy of the youth in a positive direction," he said.

Mann handed over the sanction cheque to Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner Varjeet Singh Walia and Punjab Badminton Association Secretary Ritin Khanna for the construction of the new facility. He said the Public Works Department would execute the project, with construction expected to begin in August after the tendering process. “The Public Works Department will execute this project, and the tender process will begin shortly. Construction is expected to commence in August. The existing four outdoor multipurpose courts will be converted into a world-class indoor badminton facility equipped with international-standard infrastructure," he said. The Chief Minister said the existing four outdoor multipurpose courts at the stadium would be converted into an international-standard indoor badminton complex. Once completed, the Raizada Hansraj Stadium will have 10 indoor badminton courts, making it the first venue in Punjab with such a large indoor badminton facility. He said the upgraded infrastructure would strengthen Punjab’s ability to host national and international badminton tournaments and ensure the successful conduct of the Sub-Junior Badminton Championship later this year. During the visit, Mann also interacted with players, coaches and sports officials, reiterating the state government’s commitment to creating world-class sports infrastructure and nurturing young sporting talent across Punjab.
