(Image for representation | File photo) A gang allegedly posing as visitors robbed cash and jewellery worth around Rs 9 lakh from a house in northeast Delhi’s New Usmanpur after holding a woman and her three children hostage inside their home, police said. The incident took place at the residence of Harishchandra, a social activist, who was away from home when the suspects arrived at around 1:30 pm. According to police, the men first contacted Harishchandra over the phone, claiming they had come to meet him.

He informed them that he was not at home and told them they should have called before visiting. Shortly afterwards, his phone switched off due to low battery. After losing contact with Harishchandra, the suspects allegedly approached his wife and children and claimed that he had asked them to let the visitors inside and offer them tea while he was on his way home. Believing the claim, the family allowed the men into the house. Once inside, the gang overpowered the occupants and held them hostage. Police said the suspects tied their hands with ropes and stuffed bandages into their mouths to prevent them from raising an alarm. Family members later told investigators that the men were armed and repeatedly pointed guns at them during the ordeal. The gang remained inside the house for about an hour, searching different rooms before fleeing through the rear gate, according to police.

Investigators said the suspects escaped with cash worth approximately Rs 9 lakh and jewellery from the residence. The robbers also allegedly took away the digital video recorder (DVR) connected to the home’s CCTV system, apparently in an attempt to destroy evidence. After the gang fled, family members managed to alert the police. Teams were dispatched to the spot and an investigation was launched. Police said CCTV footage from surrounding areas is being examined to identify the suspects and reconstruct their movements before and after the crime. Further investigation is underway.
