The Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory listing the roads, junctions and areas commuters should steer clear of, as the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) presses ahead with a planned march to Parliament on July 20, one for which, police say, no formal permission has been sought. Barricades, vehicle checks and rolling road closures are expected to slow traffic across several parts of the city through the day.Top of the list are the roads running closest to Parliament.
The advisory names Rafi Marg, Motilal Nehru Marg, Maulana Azad Road, K Kamraj Marg, Raisina Road, Rajendra Prasad Road, Parliament Street, Ashoka Road, Talkatora Road, Pandit Pant Marg and Rakab Ganj Gurudwara Road as stretches to skip if at all possible. These are likely to see sudden, short-notice closures whenever MPs or other VIPs are entering or leaving the area.Several roundabouts and crossings in the vicinity are also flagged as trouble spots: Vijay Chowk, Boat Club, Rail Bhawan, Sunehri Masjid, Patel Chowk, Bhagat Singh Chowk, Prime Chowk, GRG and Jalebi Chowk. Anyone commuting to offices or commercial areas in Lutyens' Delhi should factor in extra travel time, especially through the morning and evening peak hours.To help commuters get around the closures, traffic police have suggested a set of alternate routes: Janpath, Mansingh Road, Akbar Road, Teen Murti Marg, Shanti Path, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Road, Kamal Ataturk Marg, Panchsheel Marg, Vinay Marg, the Outer Circle at Connaught Place, Baba Kharak Singh Marg, Ram Manohar Lohia Road, Mother Teresa Crescent Road, 11 Murti and Sardar Patel Marg.
Traffic personnel will be posted at major intersections to guide vehicles through.Behind the diversions is the CJP's march, backed by activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has urged supporters to walk to Parliament. The party has been protesting at Jantar Mantar since June 20, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in the NEET exam, along with reforms to the exam system and relief for affected students. Wangchuk was earlier moved to Safdarjung Hospital after the High Court directed the government to monitor his health. In a letter posted on X on Sunday morning through his wife, he called the march a "second movement of Independence" and described his detention as illegal.Alongside the traffic curbs, police have stepped up security across the New Delhi district, deploying extra personnel, reinforcing barricades and running thorough vehicle checks at entry points.
