The Congress leadership is yet to take a final call, but discussions are underway on appointing more than one deputy chief minister to accommodate leaders from different communities and camps within the party. Among the prominent names being discussed is senior Congress leader and home minister G Parameshwara, who belongs to the Scheduled Caste community and has previously served as deputy chief minister. His name is being seen as a strong contender if the party opts for a power-sharing formula. Several leaders close to Siddaramaiah are also believed to be in contention as the Congress attempts to reassure the outgoing chief minister’s camp after the leadership transition.
The party is simultaneously dealing with negotiations over cabinet berths and the appointment of a new Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) chief, making the deputy CM decision part of a larger power-sharing exercise. Shivakumar, who has served as deputy chief minister since May 2023, is expected to be formally elected leader of the Congress Legislature Party before taking oath as chief minister. Congress leaders have indicated that the final decision on deputy chief minister posts and cabinet composition will be taken by the party high command after consultations with state leaders.
