File image/News18 Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh has indicated that India’s BrahMos supersonic cruise missile deal with Vietnam has already been signed and deliveries can happen soon. Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Singh said that while the Philippines was the first foreign buyer of the BrahMos missile system, negotiations with Indonesia and Vietnam were also in advanced stages.
“My understanding is that with both Indonesia and Vietnam the deal is in the final stages, and in fact for Vietnam I understand that it has already been signed, probably not publicly announced, but it’s already been signed," Singh said. The remarks give the strongest official indication yet that Vietnam has concluded a deal for the Indian-made missile system, which has emerged as one of New Delhi’s flagship defence exports. This is the same system which was used by Indian Armed Forces during Operation Sindoor. The BrahMos missile, jointly developed by India and Russia, is among the world’s fastest operational supersonic cruise missiles and can be launched from land, sea and air platforms. The missile has become a key pillar of India’s push to expand defence exports and strengthen strategic partnerships across the Indo-Pacific.
The Philippines became the first foreign customer for BrahMos after signing a contract worth nearly $375 million in January 2022 for shore-based anti-ship missile systems, further to which both Indonesia and Vietnam had shown their interest in the platform. Vietnam has long been viewed as a potential customer for the missile system amid growing maritime security concerns in the South China Sea. Discussions between New Delhi and Hanoi on BrahMos acquisition have been ongoing for several years, with both sides exploring financing and platform integration options. Recently, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was on an official visit to Vietnam and BrahMos was one of the core agendas of the visit. Singh also linked advanced defence exports to what he described as “trusted interdependence", stating that countries share sensitive technologies and advanced platforms only with trusted partners and friendly nations.
He emphasised India’s strong commitment to ASEAN countries and said New Delhi views the region as a trusted strategic partner with whom it is willing to share advanced defence technologies.
