Their bodies were found after their son-in-law noticed the stench from the house and broke open the door. The couple, who had been married for 40 years, met a tragic end after Gangadhar Bhongade, 77, a retired defence employee, slipped and fell in the kitchen.

He suffered a fatal injury and died on the spot, while his cell phone remained switched off, according to a report by the Times of India. His wife Kaushalya, 75, who was bedridden and dependent on Gangadhar, could not access food or water amid the scorching heat in Nagpur. She succumbed to dehydration, starvation and extreme heat days after Gangadhar’s death. Mohammad Ghouse, the husband of Kaushalya’s daughter from her first marriage, had gone to meet the elderly couple. He broke open the door and found Gangadhar’s body in the kitchen, while Kaushalya lay motionless on the bed. When Did The Incident Happen? The couple had no children of their own. Kaushalya had two sons and two daughters from her first marriage.

Her eldest son left home in 2018 and never returned, and her youngest son passed away in 2025. The elder sister was a key point of contact who looked after the couple. Police said the tragedy unfolded around the night of May 26, citing the newspapers of three days piled outside their residence. “Gangadhar’s body was in an advanced state of decay, while Kaushalya’s body was relatively less decomposed, suggesting she survived her husband by a few days," a police official told TOI. Gangadhar reportedly spoke to their elder daughter on Saturday and informed her about his health. He requested someone to look after Kaushalya, and the daughter assured him she would visit them in the first week of June.

However, the couple’s condition worsened with no immediate support available.
