The Vellore district police destroyed 10,568 kg of seized gutkha products on Sunday. The contraband was destroyed at an open plot in Thangal village on the outskirts of Vellore Corporation after getting necessary permission from the court.
Police said Superintendent of Police N.U. Sivaraman had ordered the destruction of the seized tobacco products as part of continuous action to curb smuggling and the use of gutkha products.
The gutkha products had been confiscated in multiple enforcement operations and during vehicle checks within the limits of the police stations such as Pallikonda, Vellore Taluk, Virinchipuram and Anaicut, that come under Vellore sub-division in the district.
Police said the disposal process was conducted after “strictly following legal and environmental norms” in the selected spot.
