Security forces on Sunday recovered a 4-kg improvised explosive device (IED) concealed inside a pressure cooker during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in Jammu and Kashmir's Bandipora district. The IED was detected in the orchards of Mangnipora village by a joint team of the 27 Assam Rifles and the Jammu and Kashmir Police. Officials said the Bomb Disposal Squad of the J&K Police later defused the explosive device.

The recovery comes amid intensified counter-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir, days after a key Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander was killed in an encounter with security forces in Shopian district. KEY LeT COMMANDER KILLED Zakir Ganai, an A++ category terrorist, was among two terrorists first spotted by security forces through surveillance cameras on July 3 in a dense orchard area of Shopian.
Security forces later launched an operation in the area, which resulted in Ganai's death and was described as a major success in the ongoing counter-terror campaign in the Valley. According to security records, Ganai was a resident of Kulgam district and had been associated with the LeT since 2024. His killing was considered significant as he was among the senior operatives of the outfit active in south Kashmir.
Shopian has historically remained a key area for militant movements, serving as a transit corridor connecting south Kashmir with central Kashmir and the Pir Panjal range. The latest IED recovery highlights the continued security challenge in the region, with forces maintaining heightened surveillance and conducting search operations to detect potential terror infrastructure and prevent attacks.
