In an India Today special interview, Skyroot Aerospace founders Pavan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharat Daka discuss the successful launch of Vikram-1, India's first private space orbiter. Chandana details the challenges of starting the company in 2018, stating, 'Literally, the odds of success seemed almost zero at that time.' He notes that the Vikram-1 rocket was built with the help of 400 Indian suppliers and that more than 95 percent of Skyroot's talent had no prior experience in the space sector.
Daka explains the impact of recent government policies, stating, 'It's not just enabling reforms, these are encouraging reforms.' He points out that the introduction of a 1000 crore space tech fund and active government support have led to the creation of 300 to 400 new space startups. The founders also address the movement of scientists from ISRO to the private sector, viewing it as a natural progression that helps build a parallel talent pool in India's growing commercial space industry.
