The all-party meeting ahead of the Monsoon Session witnessed high political drama after the Centre invited rebel TMC MPs, who have announced their merger with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI). Opposition parties protested the move and also objected to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla's decision to allot separate seating to the 20 rebel MPs.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju appealed for constructive debate and urged the Opposition to ensure the smooth functioning of Parliament. The recognition of the rebel TMC and UBT factions has also altered the numbers in the Lok Sabha, boosting the NDA's strength to 318 and bringing it closer to the two-thirds majority mark.
