(IMAGE: PTI FILE) Exiled Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasrin has hit back at Left leaders in West Bengal for allegedly branding her a BJP and RSS supporter ahead of her return to Kolkata after nearly 19 years, insisting that she was invited by a secular organisation and that the state government’s role is limited to providing security. In a strongly worded social media post, Nasrin said her August 1 visit had been organised by Secular Mission, led by a “progressive Muslim personality" Osman Gani Mallik, dismissing claims that the BJP was facilitating her return. “Is the BJP bringing me to Kolkata? No. Is the Government of West Bengal bringing me? No," she wrote. “The elected government of West Bengal is only providing security for my visit. Whenever I travel to any state, irrespective of which political party is in power, it is the responsibility of that state’s government to ensure my security.
That is a normal administrative duty," she added. Taking aim at sections of the Left, Nasrin said leaders who had once forced her out of West Bengal were now accusing her of being aligned with the BJP, RSS or Hindutva. “They had driven me out of West Bengal, and now they claim that merely setting foot in the state makes me a Hindutva supporter, a BJP supporter, or an RSS supporter." She also accused Left leaders of hypocrisy, recalling that she had visited Kerala several times at the invitation of the CPI(M) government, where she was welcomed and provided Z+ security. “At that time, did these Left leaders in Kolkata abuse me as a Leftist, or did they celebrate my visits?" she asked. Campaign Of False Propaganda Nasrin questioned why her brief two-day visit to Kolkata had triggered what she described as a campaign of “false propaganda", noting that she would be returning to the city after 18 years, eight months and 10 days. The author also renewed her criticism of successive governments in West Bengal, alleging that the Left Front had expelled her from Kolkata while the subsequent Trinamool Congress government prevented her from entering the state, stopped the television broadcast of a serial she had written and cancelled one of her book launches. She further accused sections of the Left of appeasing Islamic fundamentalists while remaining silent on issues of free speech and reform within the Muslim community.
