Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre surrendered before the Vishnu Nagar police in Kalyan on Sunday (July 19, 2026), complying with the Bombay High Court order that cancelled his bail in the assault case at Shastri Nagar Hospital. The High Court had directed him to surrender by 5 p.m. on July 19.
Police produced Mr. Mhatre before a Kalyan court following his surrender. The court remanded him to judicial custody till August 3, an official said. 5th accused held On the same day, the Vishnu Nagar police arrested Sadhana Karande, the mother of the pregnant woman whose treatment triggered the incident.
With her arrest, the number of accused in the case has risen to five. She was produced before the Kalyan court. According to the police, Ms. Karande joined Mr. Mhatre and his supporters in assaulting doctors and nurses after an argument over an alleged delay in treating the pregnant woman at the civic hospital.
The Bombay High Court on Saturday (July 18, 2026) cancelled the bail granted to Mr. Mhatre by the Kalyan Judicial Magistrate First Class Court and directed him to surrender. The matter has been posted for further hearing on Wednesday (July 22).
