Andhra Pradesh Finance Minister Payyavula Keshav says that the YSRCP, which has lost public support, is struggling for relevance and levelling baseless allegations that the Handri-Neeva canal works have been neglected by the NDA government. On the day when the YSRCP organised ‘Chalo Cholasamudram’ to highlight the alleged neglect of the canal works by the government, Mr. Keshav, along with Rayadurgam MLA and Chief Whip Kaluva Srinivasulu, inspected the ongoing works at Uravakonda. Speaking to the media later, the Minister alleged that the YSRCP, which had completely neglected the Handri-Neeva project during its five-year term, was now staging a political drama under the guise of inspecting the canal to mislead the public.
The Finance Minister noted that the expansion works had progressed rapidly between 2014 and 2019 due to the initiative taken by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, with approximately 35% of the work completed by 2019. “The subsequent YSRCP government led by Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy halted the works abruptly, severely hampering the project’s progress,” Mr. Keshav said, and criticised the YSRCP president for failing to spend ₹500 crore on the project during his term. Keshav and Mr. Srinivasulu questioned why the YSRCP leaders did not confront Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy for completely deceiving the people by failing to fulfil his promise of expanding the canal’s capacity to 6,000 cusecs and constructing a parallel canal.
“The YSRCP leaders, who halted the expansion works and failed to move a basket of earth, have no moral right to speak about the Handri-Neeva project,” the TDP leaders said, adding that the expansion works had been completed on a war-footing in two years of the alliance government assuming office. “The Handri-Neeva works stand as a testament to Mr. Naidu’s sincerity towards the farmers and people of Anantapur district,” they said. Expressing confidence that the YSRCP had no chance of coming to power in the future, they asserted that the people would once again entrust their mandate to Mr. Naidu’s leadership.
