The Delhi High Court has backed the government's decision to shift climate activist Sonam Wangchuk to Safdarjung Hospital, ruling the move was not arbitrary due to his deteriorating health from an extended hunger strike. Rejecting claims of illegal detention or violation of bodily autonomy, the court noted that Wangchuk remains a free citizen treated with his consent.
This comes after his wife, Gitanjali Angmo, moved the court seeking his transfer to Medanta Hospital, alleging unlawful detention. The High Court has issued notices to the government, police, and hospital authorities to file a status report within three days. Medical reports indicate Wangchuk has low blood sugar and dangerously low potassium levels, requiring continuous monitoring.
