A proposal to introduce a mass transit system for Mysuru is under consideration as part of the draft Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), with the State government also preparing long-term CMPs for all district headquarters and major cities in the State. The proposal was reviewed during a meeting chaired by Urban Development Minister Yathindra Siddaramaiah in Bengaluru recently to assess the progress of the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT).
Officials said CMPs, with a 20-year planning horizon, are intended to guide future investments in transport infrastructure and sustainable urban mobility. For Mysuru, the draft CMP recommends introducing a mass transit system along high-demand travel corridors, in line with the State government’s ‘Beyond Bengaluru’ initiative which is aimed at strengthening urban transport in emerging cities. Officials clarified that the Mysuru plan will be finalised only after stakeholder consultations and public feedback.
The meeting also reviewed the utilisation of the State Urban Transport Fund (SUTF), which has been used to develop modern bus terminals, improve cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, expand city bus services, and support electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure across urban centres. The Minister directed officials to ensure equitable allocation of SUTF resources across all regions without discrimination, while giving priority to projects that enhance public transport and promote safe, sustainable urban development.
DULT Commissioner Major P. Manivannan, Urban Development Department Secretary B.B. Kaveri, DULT Special Officer Monica and other senior officials were present.
