On Earth, it is best known for its role in food chemistry and cosmetic formulations. It is said to be a four-carbon sugar, unlike regular table sugar.Also, scientists claim that it can help to produce ribonucleotides, the molecular building blocks of RNA. According to the latest research, the discovery of erythrulose in space lends credence to the idea that the universe is brimming with the ingredients necessary for life.If the research is to be believed, the sugar was found in a dense molecular cloud near the centre of the Milky Way. For the uninitiated, molecular clouds are vast clouds of gas and dust where stars and planets are born and scientists often refer to these clouds as cosmic chemical laboratories because they allow simple atoms to combine to form more complex molecules.Researchers discovered it while studying the cloud using two radio telescopes in Spain. In the past, crowded regions made it difficult to detect sugars because signals from different molecules overlapped.
But the new lab technique using lasers recently gave scientists the ability to reproduce the unique light signature of erythrulose, making it much easier to find the sugar's fingerprint in the cosmic noise. As per the study, the cloud was rich in erythrulose, but there was little sign of three-carbon sugars. This was not a gradual transition from simple three-carbon sugars to more complex four-carbon sugars.Scientists believed for years that sugars in space were built up step by step. But, the new observations have put that theory to the test. Instead, the research team now believes that erythrulose is formed when two smaller organic molecules, each containing two carbon atoms, combine. If this alternative pathway is confirmed, it would alter scientists’ understanding of how complex organic molecules form in molecular clouds.The origin of Earth’s first sugars is still a mystery to scientists. And if we go by past research, ribose and glucose have been detected on meteorites and asteroids, and scientists have hypothesized that strikes by space rocks brought many organic compounds to the young Earth.
