Following a hunger strike in the national capital, another indefinite hunger strike has emerged in Madhya Pradesh. An activist has been on a fast since July 6 on a tributary of the Ken River, protesting against the Ken-Betwa river linking project. Villagers in Chhatarpur and Panna districts are demanding fair compensation for acquired land.
The protests feature unique demonstrations, including a chita satyagraha by women and representational hanging protests by men. Protesters claim they have faced hundreds of police cases after previous assurances from the administration went unfulfilled. The central government's Jal Shakti Department oversees the project, which continues to face local opposition over rehabilitation and land rights.
