A mother and her husband in Surat's Varachha area abandoned her five-year-old son seven months ago, then later approached police with a fabricated missing complaint to cover up the act. Police exposed the conspiracy through CCTV footage and questioning, rescued the child from a children's home in Katargam, and arrested both accused. According to police, Ravi, 30, and his wife Durga, residents of Varachha, visited the police station and claimed that their five-year-old son had gone missing while playing in the courtyard of their home at around 6 pm on July 16, 2026.
The couple told police that the child had suddenly disappeared. Read Full Story However, the police found the couple's statements and behaviour suspicious and launched a detailed investigation. Officers examined footage from around 25 CCTV cameras and questioned local residents. Police said the CCTV footage did not support the couple's version of events, deepening their suspicion. After sustained questioning, the couple confessed to abandoning the child months earlier. Police said the son is Durga's son from her first husband, Rajkumar. Durga later married Ravi, who is the child's stepfather. According to the investigation, the couple did not want to keep or raise the child and considered him a burden after their marriage.
Police said the accused admitted that they had abandoned the boy on December 1, 2025, in the Jagdish Nagar Chowpatty area of Varachha, leaving him alone in an unsafe condition. They decided to abandon the child permanently because they did not want to take responsibility for his upbringing. According to police, the couple fabricated the missing complaint after people started repeatedly asking Durga about the child's whereabouts. Fearing that the truth would come out and to avoid legal consequences, they created a false story claiming that their son had recently gone missing.
During the investigation, police traced the boy to a children's home in Katargam, where he was found safe. Varachha Police have registered a case against Ravi and Durga under Sections 93 and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for abandoning the child in an unsafe condition and providing false information to the police. Both accused have been arrested, and further legal proceedings are underway. Ends
