The woman, identified as Shabnam Begum, said she reached Muscat on March 26 after a local recruitment agent offered her employment as a housemaid. However, instead of the job she had been promised, she alleged she was made to work for 12 to 15 hours every day without receiving any salary. In a video recorded by herself and sent to Hyderabad-based politician Amjed Ullah Khan of the Majlis Bachao Tehreek, Shabnam claimed she had not been paid for more than three months.
She also alleged that her employers kept her without a mobile phone for nearly one-and-a-half months, leaving her unable to contact anyone. The woman further claimed that she was physically assaulted, subjected to torture and denied proper food during her stay. Unable to endure the alleged abuse, she said she managed to escape from her employer’s house and sought refuge at the Indian Embassy in Muscat. Sharing her video on X, Amjed Ullah claimed Shabnam had been promised a monthly salary of 200 Omani riyals (around Rs 50,000) before leaving for Oman. Instead, he alleged she was sent to work in multiple houses, made to work 12 to 15 hours a day, denied proper food and accommodation, and was not paid for four months.
He said the woman’s family has approached External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, requesting that the Indian Embassy in Muscat be directed to ensure her safety and facilitate her return to Hyderabad.
