The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is likely to support the delimitation bill in the upcoming monsoon session of parliament, providing a significant boost to the Democratic Alliance. The regional party has indicated it is not against the delimitation exercise, provided the legislation includes a clause ensuring a 50 percent increase in seats for every state. This condition aims to maintain the current political ratio and prevent Southern states from losing their political clout to Northern states.
With 22 Lok Sabha members and eight Rajya Sabha members, the party's 30 crucial votes could help the ruling coalition inch closer to the required two-thirds majority. Currently, the ruling alliance has 318 members in the Lok Sabha, falling short of the 360 mark needed to pass the constitutional amendment. In the Rajya Sabha, the coalition has 143 members against the required 163.
The potential backing from regional factions, alongside other unaligned parties, could create a comfortable majority for the government to pass the delimitation bill in both houses of parliament.
