Photograph: Reuters Russia launched what Ukraine described as the largest ballistic missile attack on Kyiv since the start of Moscow’s full-scale invasion in 2022, with the overnight assault killing at least one person and injuring eight others, according to local authorities. Ukraine’s acting Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Russia fired the largest number of ballistic missiles in a single attack since the war began, describing the barrage as a major escalation in Moscow’s aerial campaign against the Ukrainian capital. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia launched more than 40 missiles of various types, most of them targeting Kyiv, along with 120 attack drones overnight.
In a statement, he said one person had been reported killed in Kyiv and the surrounding region, while 16 others were injured, adding that emergency response operations were continuing at three locations with nearly 600 first responders deployed. Residential buildings, office and industrial facilities, a dormitory and several vehicles were damaged as emergency crews worked to rescue people trapped in burning structures. Zelenskyy said Russia has intensified its attacks in recent days, claiming that over the past week alone Moscow launched around 1,450 attack drones, more than 1,640 guided aerial bombs and 99 missiles of various types against Ukraine.

According to Zelenskyy, the Vinnytsia, Dnipro, Donetsk, Zhytomyr, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Poltava, Kharkiv, Kherson and Cherkasy regions also came under Russian attack during the week. Calling protection against ballistic missiles Ukraine’s “constant and top priority," Zelenskyy urged Kyiv’s allies to accelerate deliveries of interceptor missiles and advanced air defence systems. “Interceptors are needed every day," he said, adding that existing military assistance packages were “literally saving lives during every massive Russian attack." He also called for continued pressure on Russia, saying delays in imposing new sanctions give Moscow more time to plan further attacks and find ways to circumvent restrictions.
