The Madhya Pradesh police have removed tribal farmers and protesters from a sit-in site in Chhatarpur district, ending their Jal Satyagraha against the Ken-Betwa river linking project. The demonstration, held on the banks of a tributary river beneath an underpass in Kupi village, involved protesters demanding fair compensation for land acquired for the project. The farmers claim their irrigated land was classified as unirrigated, reducing their compensation amount.
During the police action, a farmer leader who had been on an indefinite hunger strike for fourteen days, lying on a pyre in the middle of the river, was removed and shifted to a hospital. While protesters allege they were arrested and detained by the heavy police force, law enforcement officials deny any detentions, stating the farmers were put on buses and sent back.
Police claim the removal was necessary due to ongoing underpass construction. The Ken-Betwa project aims to transfer excess water from the Ken River to the Betwa River to address water shortages in dry zones.
