'Zero Tolerance': Vijay's Anti-Corruption Drive Leads To Suspension Of 7 Tamil Nadu Officials Published By, Last Updated: July 19, 2026, 10:50 IST The action followed surprise inspections conducted last week in two Chennai zones, during which authorities allegedly uncovered unaccounted cash. Rapid Read Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay. (X) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay’s anti-corruption campaign gathered momentum with the suspension of seven Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) officials and the registration of an FIR against them over alleged corruption and unexplained financial transactions. The action followed surprise inspections conducted last week in two Chennai zones, during which authorities allegedly uncovered unaccounted cash and suspicious digital transactions. According to GCC officials, the inspections were carried out in Zones 6 and 9, covering several key areas across North and Central Chennai.
“One assistant executive engineer was unable to explain GPay transactions amounting to ₹2.39 lakh during the surprise inspection," a senior GCC official told India Today. Vigilance Report Triggers Action The suspensions and criminal proceedings were initiated after the Greater Chennai Corporation received a report from the Tamil Nadu Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC). Officials said the accused have been booked under anti-corruption provisions while departmental proceedings are also being initiated. Zone 6 includes areas such as Kolathur, Ayanavaram and Perambur, while Zone 9 covers parts of Central Chennai, including Thousand Lights, Mylapore and Nungambakkam. More Dismissals Possible The latest crackdown comes just days after six other GCC officials were suspended over separate allegations involving bribery, fake billing and a cash-for-jobs racket.
Authorities are now considering stronger action, including dismissal from service, if the allegations are proven during departmental inquiries. Vijay government’s anti-graft campaign has also targeted individuals linked to the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Earlier, a TVK panchayat leader was arrested after a video purportedly showed him accepting a bribe. The party expelled him before a formal FIR was registered, signalling that disciplinary action would extend even to its own members. The government has also launched a dedicated WhatsApp helpline managed by the DVAC to enable citizens to report alleged instances of bribery and corruption in public offices. The platform allows complainants to submit evidence and details directly to vigilance authorities for investigation.
