Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s wife Gitanjali Angmo has moved the Delhi High Court seeking his transfer from Safdarjung Hospital to a private hospital, claiming she has no trust in the government-run medical facility. Angmo has sought an urgent hearing on the petition today itself, arguing that Wangchuk has been “illegally and unlawfully detained under the pretext of medical intervention” while he was on the 21st day of his peaceful hunger strike at Jantar Mantar.
Read Full Story According to the petition, Wangchuk has been kept in isolation and denied access to his counsel and doctors who had been examining him for the last 20 days. The plea seeks a writ declaring his continued confinement at Safdarjung Hospital as illegal, unconstitutional and violative of Articles 19 and 21 of the Constitution. “Issue appropriate writ and declare the continued confinement of Sonam Wangchuk at Safdarjung Hospital, in isolation and without access to his counsel or doctors who had been examining him for the last 20 days, as illegal, unconstitutional and violative of Articles 19 and 21 of the Constitution of India, and direct his immediate release/discharge from such confinement,” the petition states.
The move comes amid a political storm over Wangchuk’s removal from his protest site and subsequent admission to Safdarjung Hospital for medical treatment. Hospital authorities
had earlier said he was weak due to prolonged fasting and dehydration but was stable and required continuous monitoring. Ends
