Yet, rather than paying tribute to the late leader, sections of the crowd directed chants at the President: “Death to the compromiser". The scene subtly highlighted how Iran is struggling to strike a balance between efforts to reach a peace truce with the United States and accusations of surrender to the United States, according to CNN. The power struggle came to the surface after the death of Ali Khamenei, who was killed on the opening day of the joint US-Israeli strikes on February 28. Although Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba Khamenei, was named his successor shortly after his assassination, he has chosen to remain out of public view amid security concerns.

The stark criticism directed at top Iranian leaders during the funeral ceremony represents a theory that has been doing rounds within the country’s hardliners for months, especially since the death of Khamenei –– the leaders who negotiated a truce with Washington are orchestrating a “soft coup" against the Islamic Republic as Iran’s Supreme Leaders remains invisible due to security threats, CNN reported. The hardliners who assembled at the funeral reckon that instead of avenging the leader’s death, the top brass chose to surrender to the US by signing an agreement that defied the orders of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
