In a statement, Safdarjung Hospital said Wangchuk was admitted with complaints of generalised weakness. It said he had no history of fainting episodes and was conscious at the time of admission, with stable pulse, blood pressure and oxygen saturation, although doctors observed signs of dehydration. The hospital said medical investigations showed compensated acidosis on blood gas analysis and low serum potassium levels.
Doctors have recommended oral/intravenous fluids and electrolyte therapy. According to the hospital, Wangchuk has refused intravenous fluids, oral rehydration solution and all medications, despite repeated counselling. The hospital said Wangchuk’s family has not yet given consent for the recommended treatment. He remains under close medical observation, and doctors are continuing efforts to persuade him and his family to accept medical treatment to avoid complications. Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, questioned the medical assessment carried out at Safdarjung Hospital and called for an independent evaluation of his condition. In a post on X, she alleged that the family’s request to have Wangchuk’s tests conducted at another laboratory and to obtain his blood samples for independent analysis was not accepted. She further claimed that the family had sought his discharge so he could be shifted to a hospital of their choice.
