The accused, identified as Ramprasad Sonwani alias Bengali, a resident of Sonpuri village, was arrested on Friday after allegedly confessing to the crime during questioning. Police said he is also a repeat offender and was previously convicted in the murder of another woman in 2017, according to a report by the Times Of India.
The incident reportedly took place on the night of July 6 when Sonwani allegedly entered the woman’s house and attempted to sexually assault her. When she resisted, he allegedly attacked her with a spade, killing her on the spot. According to police cited by the outlet, after killing the woman, the accused engaged in necrophilia, a condition involving sexual attraction to or sexual acts with dead bodies, before using a saw to dismember the corpse. Officials further claimed he sexually assaulted the body again after cutting it into pieces. The remains were allegedly kept overnight in his hut before being dumped into the Shivnath River the following night to destroy evidence. The crime came to light after the victim’s son discovered two bundles wrapped in household clothes near the Amaraiya stream, which flows into the Shivnath River. The probe involved forensic experts, a dog squad, drones, boats and searchlights. Bemetara Superintendent of Police Trilok Bansal said the victim’s son’s statement, along with technical and circumstantial evidence, led investigators to Sonwani, who later allegedly confessed to the crime. Police also claimed that the accused admitted to stealing Rs 2,500 from the victim’s house before fleeing. Officers recovered the murder weapon, the saw allegedly used to cut the body, and other evidence based on information provided by the accused. Additional charges have been added under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The accused was produced before a magistrate and has been remanded to judicial custody.
