District Collector A. Siri has said that a clean environment is achievable through scientific waste management. She stressed the need for business and commercial complexes in the city to establish their own waste processing plants to handle the waste generated on their premises. As part of the ‘Swarna Andhra-Swachh Andhra’ programme, the Collector, along with Municipal Commissioner Challa Obulesu, visited a departmental store and raised awareness about the Solid Waste Management Rules-2026. They launched the ‘Bulk Waste Generator’ registration process. The Collector explained that under the Central government’s Solid Waste Management Rules-2026 and the Swachh Survekshan programme, entities generating over 100 kg of solid waste daily—such as business and commercial complexes, hotels, shopping malls, function halls, and educational institutions—are required to register as ‘Bulk Waste Generators.’ She said the Central government encourages such institutions to scientifically process their wet waste on-site wherever possible, using methods like composting, biomethanation, or other approved technologies.
Such entities would be recognised as ‘Bulk Waste Generators’ upon registering on the Central Pollution Control Board’s (CPCB) centralised online portal. Subsequently, the municipal corporation will verify the details and provide the necessary guidelines on the waste processing units that must be established in accordance with regulations. The Municipal Commissioner said scientifically managing waste at the source can significantly reduce pollution and improve the city’s cleanliness. Obulesu said the government is promoting such on-site waste processing systems with the aim of environmental protection and sustainable waste management.
