The Lok Sabha Speaker has recognised the merger of six rebel Shiv Sena UBT MPs with the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. The rebel MPs had quit the UBT camp and joined the Shinde faction during a press conference last month. This development strengthens the position of the Shinde Sena in Maharashtra politics and increases the Democratic Alliance's numbers in the Lok Sabha from 292 to 298.
The change in numbers comes ahead of the parliament's monsoon session beginning on Monday, which will involve the introduction of key bills. While the decision on the six UBT MPs has been finalised in consultation with experts, a ruling is awaited regarding the merger of twenty rebel Trinamool Congress MPs with the NCPI. The shifting allegiances change the political landscape as the ruling alliance consolidates its parliamentary strength.
