Activists of the All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO) staged a protest in Hassan on Saturday, condemning the Central government’s action against Sonam Wangchuk and his supporters, who are on a hunger protest in Delhi. The protesters gathered at the Hemavathi Statue Circle in Hassan and objected to the police action of forcibly taking away Mr. Wangchuk.
They urged the Central government to initiate dialogue with the protesters on their demands. AIDSO district president Chaithra U.K. said nationwide protests were being held demanding the resignation of Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over irregularities in the NEET-UG examination. The irregularities had left lakhs of students worried, she said, and some had even ended their lives as a result.
Wangchuk and others were staging the protest demanding the resignation of the Union Education Minister. His health deteriorated on the 20th day of the hunger protest, yet the government did not initiate dialogue with the protesters. This reflected the government’s disregard for democratic values, Ms. Chaithra said. AIDSO district secretary Sushma D.S. said it was the duty of the ruling government to listen to the grievances raised by the public.
Instead of answering the genuine questions raised by the protesters, the government had resorted to the use of force, she said. The protesters demanded the Centre talk to protesters, take the resignation of Mr. Pradhan and abolish the Testing Agency.
