The announcement comes days after US President Donald Trump signalled that Washington no longer considered the agreement effective. Speaking to reporters alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte ahead of the NATO summit, Trump said, “To me, I think it’s over. I don’t want to deal with them." He further criticised Iran’s leadership, saying, “They’re scum.
They’re sick people. They’re led by sick people. As far as I’m concerned, it’s just a waste of time dealing with them." What Was The MoU About? The Memorandum of Understanding, signed last month after weeks of indirect negotiations, was intended to de-escalate tensions between Washington and Tehran. It sought to establish a ceasefire, safeguard commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and create a framework for future discussions on sanctions relief and Iran’s nuclear programme. However, the agreement quickly came under strain as both countries accused each other of failing to honour their commitments. Both Sides Trade Allegations The White House has accused Iran of violating the MoU by targeting commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and undermining regional stability. Tehran, meanwhile, has alleged that the United States breached the agreement by resuming military operations and failing to uphold key provisions of the understanding.
Conflict Continues To Escalate Iran’s decision to suspend its commitments comes as military tensions continue to intensify. The United States has carried out a seventh consecutive night of strikes on Iranian targets, while Tehran has warned of a “full-scale offensive" in response. The renewed confrontation has heightened concerns over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest oil shipping routes, and raised fears that the conflict could spill over into a wider regional crisis.
