India has officially launched its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2028-29 term. During the launch at the United Nations headquarters in New York, the External Affairs Minister unveiled a new mission titled Shanti, which stands for Securing Holistic Advancement Through Norms, Trust, and Integrity. The campaign highlights India's commitment to global peace, equitable development, and dialogue.
While contesting for a two-year non-permanent term, India views this as a step toward its long-term goal of securing a permanent seat on the council. India argues that the current structure of the Security Council, established in 1945, fails to reflect contemporary geopolitical realities and leaves regions like Africa, Latin America, and Asia underrepresented. Furthermore, India points out that the veto power held by the five permanent members often results in deadlocks.
Backed by the G4 grouping, India aims to reform the global diplomatic body to make it more representative and effective for the twenty-first century.
