US President Donald Trump on Friday signalled that a deal to extend the ceasefire with Iran could be close, even as major disagreements remain between the two sides on issues that have been at the heart of the conflict. In a message on Truth Social, Trump suggested that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could soon resume normally and told sailors stranded by the disruption to “say HELLO to your wives, husbands, parents, and families from me, your favourite President". The remarks came as his administration weighed a proposal to extend the current ceasefire by another 60 days.
Trump said he would make a “final determination" on the proposal after a meeting in the White House Situation Room. A White House official confirmed the meeting lasted about two hours but declined to say whether a final decision had been reached. “President Trump will only make a deal that is good for America and satisfies his red lines. Iran can never possess a nuclear weapon," the official said. Major Disagreements Continue Despite signs of progress, both sides remain divided over several key issues. Trump insisted that any agreement must ensure that Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon and that the Strait of Hormuz is reopened immediately for unrestricted shipping without tolls or restrictions. “Iran must agree that they will never have a Nuclear Weapon or Bomb. The Hormuz Strait must be immediately open, no tolls, for unrestricted shipping traffic, in both directions," Trump said.
Iran, however, has not accepted those conditions. A senior Iranian source told Reuters that an agreement was close but had not yet received final approval. The source added that the proposed deal does not include nuclear related issues. Meanwhile, Iran’s semi official Fars news agency described Trump’s comments as an attempt to project a “fabricated victory". Dispute Over Strait And Frozen Assets According to Fars, Tehran is prepared to reopen the strategic waterway under its own conditions once the United States removes restrictions on Iranian shipping. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said any lifting of the American blockade on Iranian vessels would happen gradually. Fars also reported that there was an understanding regarding the release of $12 billion in frozen Iranian assets.
Trump, however, said no money would change hands “until further notice", a remark that could refer to disagreements over Iranian demands for compensation, access to frozen funds or payments linked to shipping through the strait.
