Following the deaths linked to spurious liquor consumption in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, police authorities in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur have intensified action against illegal liquor manufacturing units. In a crackdown in Kaneriwadi village of Karvir taluka, the Gokul Shirgaon Police and the Local Crime Branch raided two illicit liquor-making units operating from domestic distillation setups. During the operation, raw chemicals, illicit liquor and equipment used for manufacturing were seized and destroyed.
The total value of the destroyed material was estimated at Rs 1,55,820. Meanwhile, the death toll in the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad spurious liquor tragedy has risen to 15, according to official figures released by the administration. Of the total deaths, 10 were reported from the Pimpri-Chinchwad area, while five fatalities occurred in Pune city’s Hadapsar and Kalepadal localities. Several affected persons remain hospitalised, with some reported to be in serious condition. The investigation into the case has now been handed over to the CID. Police and the State Excise Department have arrested multiple accused in connection with the incident. Preliminary findings indicate that methanol was mixed in the liquor, leading to the deaths.
Investigating agencies are examining the wider illegal liquor network operating across Pune city, Pune rural and Pimpri-Chinchwad. In a major administrative action following the deaths of 10 people in the Phugewadi spurious liquor case, Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissioner Vinay Kumar Choubey ordered the suspension of Dapodi Police Station Inspector Vijay Waghmare on charges of negligence and serious lapses in duty. Four other police personnel, including the officer in charge of the investigation team, have also been suspended. In addition, Crime Branch Inspector Narendra Thakre has been transferred to the police control room. Police Commissioner Choubey said the action was taken over lapses in the discharge of duty.
