Punjab Cop Facing Rs 4 Crore Extortion Case In US Arrested In Hoshiarpur Published By, Last Updated: July 18, 2026, 12:48 IST A Punjab Police officer has been arrested in an alleged Rs 4 crore extortion case after US prosecutors accused him of helping a gangster-linked crime syndicate. Rapid Read Gurinderjit Singh Nagra was serving as the Station House Officer (SHO) of Tanda Police Station. A Punjab Police officer who was earlier shifted to the police lines after coming under the scanner of United States prosecutors has now been arrested in an alleged Rs 4 crore extortion case. Gurinderjit Singh Nagra, the former Station House Officer (SHO) of Tanda Police Station, has been booked under extortion provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Prevention of Corruption Act. He is accused of demanding Rs 4 crore from a family in the United States by allegedly threatening to implicate their relatives in India in a false murder case. US Allegations Linked To ‘Operation Hard Ball’ Before his arrest, Nagra had come under the spotlight after US prosecutors alleged that he assisted gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria’s organised crime syndicate.
According to the allegations, he worked with members of the gang to falsely implicate victims in a murder case and extort money by threatening criminal prosecution. The allegations form part of Operation Hard Ball, a multinational investigation targeting organised crime groups accused of offences including murder, extortion and drug trafficking across the United States, Canada and Europe. They are included in one of three indictments unsealed as part of the operation. At the time the allegations surfaced, Nagra was serving as the SHO of Tanda Police Station. The matter drew attention after a video of a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) media briefing went viral, in which officials alleged that he helped gangsters extort $400,000 (around Rs 4 crore) from a Los Angeles-based family by threatening to register false murder charges against their relatives in India. The authenticity of the allegations made by US prosecutors has not been independently verified. Punjab Police Ordered Inquiry Before Arrest Following the circulation of the video, Hoshiarpur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sandeep Kumar Malik transferred Nagra to the police lines as a precautionary measure. The SSP had said that the Punjab Police had not received any official communication or confirmation from either the Centre or the Punjab government regarding the alleged FBI claims.
However, an internal inquiry was ordered under a Superintendent of Police in Jalandhar, with officials stating that further action would depend on the findings of the investigation. According to US prosecutors, Gurlal Singh, an alleged member of the Bhagwanpuria gang, shared details of a Los Angeles-based victim with Nagra for the purpose of falsely implicating the individual in a murder case. US media reports further alleged that Nagra contacted the victim’s father and warned that criminal charges would be filed unless the family paid the demanded amount. He also allegedly threatened to name the victim in the murder investigation. The allegations against the Punjab police officer are part of a broader US case involving 37 defendants accused of participating in three transnational organised crime groups operating across multiple countries.
