When Neelu was in Class 8, she watched her father die because her family could not afford proper medical treatment. That loss changed the course of her life. Years later, the daughter of a domestic worker from Lucknow has qualified the Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG), taking a major step towards fulfilling the promise she made to herself that day โ to become a doctor so that no family has to lose a loved one because of poverty. Read Full Story A PROMISE BORN OUT OF PERSONAL TRAGEDY Neelu, who lives in Digdigiya village in Lucknow's Gomti Nagar area, grew up in a family of five with her mother Rajkumari and three sisters. Her eldest sister is married, while her youngest sibling is still studying. Her father passed away after battling a serious illness when Neelu was still in middle school.
The family's financial condition was so dire that they could not arrange proper treatment for him. "My father died simply because we couldn't afford the right medical care. That day, I decided I would become a doctor so that no one else has to lose a family member because of financial hardship," Neelu said. A MOTHER'S SACRIFICES KEPT THE DREAM ALIVE After her husband's death, Rajkumari became the family's sole breadwinner. She works as a hospital assistant while also cleaning homes to support her daughters. Despite earning only around Rs 10,000-11,000 a month, she continued to prioritise her children's education. Every rupee was carefully saved to ensure Neelu never had to give up on her dream of studying medicine. The family's journey, marked by years of financial struggle and uncertainty, became a story of resilience driven by a mother's determination and a daughter's unwavering goal.
SCHOLARSHIPS OPENED DOORS TO BIGGER OPPORTUNITIES Neelu completed her early education at Prerna Girls School, where she consistently excelled in academics. Recognising her potential, Study Hall School awarded her a scholarship when she entered Class 11. She scored 86% in her Class 10 board examinations and improved further with 94% in the CBSE Class 12 board examinations this year. Her academic performance also earned her a place in the prestigious Vahani Scholarship programme, awarded to only 50 talented students across India. The scholarship will cover her medical tuition fees and other educational expenses, significantly easing the financial burden on her family. 'EDUCATION CAN CHANGE YOUR DESTINY' Reflecting on her journey, Neelu credited her schools for giving her confidence to dream beyond her circumstances. "Prerna Girls School taught me that your background does not decide your future.
