Five members of a family, including two minor girls, were found dead inside their rented house in Chhattisgarh in a suspected case of murder-suicide, police said on Saturday. The bodies were discovered late on Friday night in a residential area in Raipur after repeated calls to the family went unanswered and neighbours noticed a foul smell emanating from the locked house. Read Full Story The deceased were identified as Sajid Ali alias Sajju, 50, his wife Rabia Bano, 45, son Irshad Ali, 20, and two minor daughters.
According to police, the house owner and neighbours alerted authorities after they failed to contact the family. When police broke open the door, they found Sajid hanging from the ceiling, while the bodies of his wife, son and two daughters were lying on the floor. Preliminary findings suggest Sajid may have poisoned his family members before dying by suicide. However, police said the exact cause of death will be determined only after post-mortem examinations and forensic analysis.
Investigators said the family, which had been living in the rented accommodation for the past eight months, was last seen on Thursday evening. The house remained locked throughout Friday, prompting another tenant to inform the landlord. Senior police officials and a forensic team examined the scene late on Friday before sealing the house for further investigation. Police said they suspect a poisonous substance may have been mixed into the family's food, but stressed that the findings remain preliminary and that the investigation is ongoing.
