Union Home Minister Amit Shah (PTI File) Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah is on a three-day visit to West Bengal, with border security, the implementation of the new criminal laws, law and order, and governance expected to dominate his engagements. Shah arrived at Bagdogra on Friday before proceeding to the Border Security Force (BSF) Frontier Headquarters at Kadamtala in Siliguri, where he stayed overnight. Focus On Border Security On Saturday, the Home Minister will visit the BSF’s 18th Battalion at Seema Chowki, Jumagachh, where he will attend a Prahari Sammelan, interact with BSF personnel, participate in a plantation drive, and inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for several infrastructure projects. Border infrastructure is expected to be a key item on the agenda during the visit. According to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who shared the details on his X account, the West Bengal government has handed over more than 1,000 acres of land to the BSF for border fencing and related infrastructure. The land is expected to facilitate fencing along approximately 172 kilometres of the India-Bangladesh border. West Bengal shares a border of more than 2,000 kilometres with Bangladesh, of which nearly 500 kilometres remain unfenced.
Officials expect Shah to review the progress of ongoing fencing projects and assess future requirements. The district-wise break-up shared by the Chief Minister indicates Murshidabad: 337 acres of land handed over, facilitating fencing along 45.4 km. North 24 Parganas: 241.03 acres allocated for 42.07 km of fencing. Cooch Behar: 135.33 acres allocated for 39.39 km of fencing. Malda: 176.78 acres allocated for 20.15 km of fencing. The Home Minister is expected to conduct a high-level review of border infrastructure and security measures during his visit to North Bengal. Review Of New Criminal Laws Later on Saturday, Shah will chair a series of high-level meetings at Uttar Kanya, the administrative headquarters of North Bengal in Siliguri. A key focus will be the implementation of the three new criminal laws Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) Senior police and administrative officials are expected to brief the Home Minister on the state’s implementation of the new legal framework. Although the three laws came into force across India nearly two years ago, West Bengal had not framed the rules required for their operational implementation. According to sources, the present state government completed the rule-making process soon after assuming office, enabling implementation across police departments over the past one-and-a-half months. The review is expected to assess the adoption of several technology-driven reforms introduced under the new laws, including Electronic service of summons through WhatsApp and email.
