According to the complaint, the company used AI-generated productivity scores, AI adoption metrics and internal tools to rank employees. The workers argue these systems did not account for periods of protected leave, affecting their performance assessments. Meta has denied the allegations, maintaining that decisions related to the layoffs were made by human managers rather than AI systems. The company declined to comment on Friday’s ruling. The employees had argued that losing their jobs would also mean losing employer-supported health insurance, stock options and other benefits, which could significantly affect those undergoing medical treatment or expecting children. Meta countered that any financial losses could be compensated later if the workers succeed in arbitration. The case is believed to be the first major legal challenge in the United States alleging that a large technology company used AI tools in a discriminatory manner during layoffs.
Meta announced in May that it would cut nearly 8,000 jobs, around 10% of its global workforce, as part of a broader restructuring while increasing investment in artificial intelligence. A separate request for a longer-term injunction remains pending before the court.
