(AFP photo) An Iran-backed Iraqi militia umbrella group has announced a $10 million reward for anyone who kills US President Donald Trump, accusing him of responsibility for the 2020 US strike that killed Iranian General Qassem Soleimani and Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. The group, calling itself the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), said the reward was funded through donations from its members and supporters. Group cites 2020 strike According to a statement reported by Iranian state media, Press TV, on Thursday, the group offered the reward to “whoever kills the criminal Trump, or whoever eliminates him personally, directs others to do so, or facilitates it as an individual, group, organisation or institution." The statement accused the US president of highlighting his role in the 2020 drone strike that killed Soleimani and al-Muhandis near Baghdad airport.
Trump had recently referred to the operation during a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi in the White House last week, defending the decision to target Soleimani. He said the strike removed what he described as a major threat, while also referring to al-Muhandis, who was killed in the same attack. The family of al-Muhandis later criticised the remarks and accused Trump of disrespecting those killed in the strike. The latest threat comes against the backdrop of renewed military escalation between the US and Iran, marking the biggest escalation between the two adversaries since their conflict resumed. Washington and Tehran are both key allies of Iraq but have long been engaged in a proxy rivalry over influence in the country. Trump has previously faced assassination attempts during his 2024 presidential campaign. In July 2024, a gunman opened fire at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, injuring Trump’s ear.
Another alleged plot was later disrupted near his golf course in Florida. US authorities have also accused individuals linked to Iran of involvement in separate alleged plans targeting Trump over the killing of Soleimani. Iran has denied involvement in such claims.
