India's first privately developed orbital rocket, Vikram-1, is set for its historic maiden launch from Sriharikota. Built by Skyroot Aerospace, the seven-storey rocket weighs three tonnes and will carry six payloads weighing a total of 350 kilograms into lower Earth orbit at an altitude of 450 kilometres. The mission features technology demonstration payloads from Graha Space, Cosmo Serve, D-Cubed, and Skyroot's SCOPE.
Cosmo Serve's Embrace mission includes a robotic arm that will remain attached to the payload deck. The rocket also carries unique cultural payloads, including Cosmic Bloom, a diamond jewellery creation by Cosmos Diamonds, and a MicroArt piece featuring an 18-karat gold rocket holding micro-sculptures of three renowned Indian scientists. Skyroot representatives noted that the rocket is entirely designed and manufactured in India, with over 90 per cent of components sourced locally.
This launch marks a major milestone for the Indian private space industry, which opened to private companies in 2020 to boost global market participation.
